The overlapping dialog scene in Jake’s car between Eddie and Hunter and Jake on the phone with Momo was inspired by Orson Welles.
Welles developed a mastery of this technique probably from his extensive experience in radio. Great examples are found in Touch of Evil and The Magnificent Ambersons. It is reported that Welles would rehearse his actors extensively, record the dialogue on tape and have the actors mouth the words to playback as they were being filmed.
ONWY Director Joe D'Augustine, who has enjoyed an extensive career as an editor, accomplished a similar effect through editing.
